FCE NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2000

Five A Day For Life

Many of us do not eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Sometimes it is hard to find new recipes for fruits and vegetables, but we are finding more and more that they are critical to our health and play a key role in helping our bodies fight against certain cancers and diseases. During June, you will have an opportunity to get some good recipes for fruit and vegetable dishes. A series of seminars will be conducted. Make plans to attend the program that best fits your needs and location. Also, if you have any favorite recipes for fruits or vegetables, send them to me and I'll incorporate them into our recipe book.

Each Friday in June there will be a Mini-Cooking school featuring recipes for fruits and vegetables. We will meet at the Williamson County Training Room in the Central Maintenance Facility on the Inner Loop in Georgetown from 12:10 to 12:50. The charge for the Georgetown series is $3 per session. Recipes will be provided and there will be tasting of the demonstrated dishes.

Five A Day Seminars In Cedar Park and Taylor

June 20th at 6:30 p.m. County Annex Community Room in Cedar Park

June 27th at 6:30 p.m. Taylor -Johns Community Hospital Education Room

Participants will get all the recipes used in the Georgetown Series. There will be a $5 fee to cover recipe book and ingredients. There will be tasting of the demonstrated dishes.

Promote these learning opportunities to your friends and neighbors! They could be a great recruiting tool for prospective FCE members!

FCE BAZAAR

This year's bazaar will be held November 4, 2000 at the Georgetown Community Center. Club requests for food booths must be made to Peggy Abrams and/or Pat Boydston no later than July 1st. Money is due in September. Please make sure you include an application form and notation that the check is for a booth. Cost for booth space is $15.00 for FCE members.

This year a quilted wall hanging will be raffled off. Raffle tickets will be passed out at the June Association meeting. Each member is asked to help sell tickets which will be $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Monies should be turned in at the September Association meeting. Last year we made approximately $90.00 selling raffle tickets just at the bazaar. This year we hope to significantly increase this amount by selling raffle tickets in advance. Let's all work together to make this year's bazaar a success.

We will be having a booth at the Fourth of July Picnic in the San Gabriel Park where we will be selling raffle tickets along with cook books. We will be promoting FCE and 4H and will need volunteers to man the booth. We will be working in 1 hour shifts starting art 9:30 A.M. until 5:00 P.M.. If you are willing to work please contact Pat Boydston or let your club president know so that she can sign you up at the June Association Meeting.

FCE Council Meeting

The next FCE Association Meeting is scheduled for June 6th, 10:00 a.m., at the Extension office. This will be a very important meeting. Officers will be elected, as well as delegates for the state meeting. Please make plans to attend.

Master Volunteer Training

There will be a Master Volunteer training for those of you interested in judging fairs, festivals and events on June 27th in Waco. If you are interested in attending, contact the Extension Office as soon as possible.

Walk Across Texas

Thanks so much to everyone who participated and helped with the Walk Across Texas Program!! It's over, but that doesn't mean you can stop walking. Keep going, and you'll be in shape for next year! We had 62 community teams and a Florence Elementary with 460 students. This gave us a grand total of 952 participants. Thanks so much for your help with the publicity and recruitment!
